There’s an old saying: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” That couldn’t be more true when it comes to leadership, growth, and building anything that lasts.
In my experience, I’ve never seen anyone succeed at a high level without a strong team around them. Talent, ambition, and grit will get you started—but collaboration is what sustains growth and takes you further than you could ever go on your own.
The Power of a Team
Collaboration isn’t just about having extra hands to help. It’s about surrounding yourself with people who bring unique skills, perspectives, and experiences to the table.
For example, I don’t spend my time learning how to do things outside my natural strengths. Instead, I lean on others who are more skilled in those areas. It frees me up to focus on the higher-level work that drives results.
When you bring people together who are smarter or better than you in different areas, things start to move faster. The best athletes in the world understand this. They constantly compare notes, ask questions, and learn from each other. Success at the highest levels is never a solo pursuit.
Why Some Leaders Resist Collaboration
If collaboration is so powerful, why do some leaders avoid it? Often, it comes down to culture.
Many of us grew up in environments where “collaboration” was seen as cheating. School taught us to keep our answers to ourselves. Workplaces sometimes reinforce that same mentality—credit-hoarding, finger-pointing, or fear of sharing ideas.
That kind of culture kills trust. And once trust is gone, collaboration is dead. The opposite is also true: when people feel safe and supported, they naturally contribute more, share openly, and solve problems together.
Collaboration in Practice
Great collaboration isn’t about endless meetings or groupthink. It’s about alignment and self-awareness.
Shared vision: Everyone needs to know what they’re working toward and why it matters.
Self-awareness: You have to understand yourself and your teammates. That way, no one is accidentally set up to fail.
Trust: When a team wins, it wins together. When it loses, it learns together.
When those ingredients are in place, collaboration creates exponential learning. People bring different perspectives—newcomers see things with fresh eyes, veterans bring hard-earned wisdom, and together, the result is stronger than what any individual could create alone.
