From a young age, I was captivated by Hall of Famers. I often found myself observing those who excelled at the highest levels and was fascinated by their ability to not only achieve greatness but to sustain it over time. One example that left a lasting impression on me was the legendary baseball player Roberto Clemente.
I admired how Clemente played with unwavering dedication, giving his all in every inning and every pitch. It was evident that Clemente not only possessed incredible skill but also found immense joy in the game.
This early fascination led me to delve deeper into what differentiates amateurs, professionals, all-stars, and hall of famers. I realized that the highest achievers who sustain their performance year after year share three things in common that I refer to as the 3 Critical Mindsteps. These mindsteps are not exclusive to elite athletes; anyone can adopt them with the right dedication and effort.
1. Connect on Purpose
The first step is to understand that success is a team effort. They take the time to understand themselves, their teammates, their clients, allies, and even their competition. This deep understanding allows them to forge strong connections, build trust, and foster a collaborative environment. By connecting on purpose, they create a foundation of mutual respect and support, which is essential for long-term success.
2. Dream on Purpose
Then, they spend considerable time visualizing their goals and dreams, creating a clear picture of where they want to go. But, they don’t just dream, they dream with intention. They write down their goals, break them down into actionable steps, and reverse engineer their path to success. Then they seek guidance from mentors or coaches who have real-world experience, not just theories. This focused dreaming enables them to stay motivated and aligned with their long term vision.
3. Prepare to Win on Purpose
Success doesn’t happen by accident. Next, they meticulously plan and prepare for their big moments. They identify the key events or “championships” in their lives and ensure they are in the best possible shape—physically, mentally, and emotionally—to excel when it matters most.
As Benjamin Franklin famously said, “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” Athletes don’t just show up at the field or arena; they undergo rigorous training and preparation to ensure they’re ready to perform at the highest level. They systemize their routines to manage the predictable aspects of their lives, which frees up their time, energy and resources to handle the unpredictable. Whether it’s daily habits, weekly rituals, or quarterly goals, these systems are their secret weapons for sustained success.
Another critical aspect of this mindset is keeping score. If you don’t keep score, how do you know whether you are winning or losing? Hall of Famers constantly measure their progress against their goals. This allows them to stay on track, make necessary adjustments, and maintain their momentum towards achieving greatness.

The common thread among all hall of famers is their commitment to doing things on purpose. They connect, dream, and prepare with intention. As a result, their success is not only predictable but also sustainable. By surrounding themselves with the right people, focusing on their strengths, and maintaining their energy, they not only achieve their own goals but also uplift those around them.
