The Power of Transformational Coaching & How it Can Transform Your Business
A couple of weeks ago, I was visiting with a brainstorming group. The topic was leadership and coaching styles and which of the two approaches is most effective. At first, I didn’t think much about it. But in hindsight, the difference between the two is remarkable. Each method is successful in its own way, but one in particular resonates with me far more directly—and now I know why.
Transactional vs. Transformational Coaching: Understanding the Difference
Transactional Coaching
The first coaching method is transactional. It presents from a position that is all about the coach and the method they developed. They use their communication talents to draw you into their world, their words, and their practices. While this method can work and create a following, I’ve found that participants often experience an emotional high that fades over time.
Transformational Coaching
In contrast, transformational coaching focuses on where you are, what your challenges are, and the state of your mindset. This approach is all about getting real with yourself and understanding what limitations you have, and which ones you may be imposing upon yourself. Transformational coaching gives you the tools and methods to begin from where you are right now and make firm, tactical changes that help you shift your behavior long-term.
Why Transformational Coaching Works
Have you ever dealt with a salesperson who is all about themselves, their company, their product? You can tell they are adding up their commission in their head while talking to you. Contrast this with a sales professional who talks about your business, what is really needed, and what solutions might be available to add genuine value.
Transformational coaching works because it focuses on creating a lasting impact. Unlike transactional coaching, which often leads to short-lived emotional highs and superficial connections, transformational coaching fosters understanding your strengths and weaknesses, addressing your mindset, and making sustainable changes. As a result, you can achieve remarkable results that endure.
It became clear that my coaching model aligns closely with the transformational approach, and this type is who I aim to be and cultivate.
