The 5th C: Communication - The Key to Sustained Success

The Power of Effective Communication

Astro Teller once said, "The team should be talking to each other, not just leadership talking to the team." Too often, communication in organizations is one-directional—from the top down. But for a company to truly operate at a high level, communication needs to flow in all directions: top-down, bottom-up, and side-to-side. Everyone should have access to the full picture, and leaders must be intentional about understanding what’s happening at every level.

Choosing the Right Communication Method

One of the best examples of leadership through communication comes from Admiral Buss, who credited his rise to the top with learning to communicate with every level of the ship. He didn’t just seek input from top officers—he talked to the crew, those who were on the ground making things happen. He knew that true understanding comes from engaging with all perspectives, not just those at the top.

A similar example can be seen in the show Undercover Boss, where executives work in frontline roles to gain insights into the realities of their business. This highlights a key communication challenge: many leaders operate in an “ivory tower,” disconnected from the day-to-day experiences of their employees. The best leaders, however, find ways to stay connected, listen actively, and ensure communication flows freely across all levels.

  • Everyone knows what success looks like
  • Teams are aligned and clear on goals

Whether it’s through weekly huddles, regular messages, or focused team meetings, communication is what sustains results over the long term. It ensures that all the work done in the other C’s—Culture, Clarity, Commitment, and Cooperation—translates into continuous progress and impact.
