The 5C’s of Success: Cooperation

How to Make It All A Priority

Early in my career, I saw a standard way insurance service teams operated: everyone did a little bit of everything. There was no specialization, no optimization. People were stretched thin doing tasks they weren’t necessarily great at, simply because that was the way things had always been done.

I started asking a simple question: What are the three most important things we do as an organization? After some thought, we agreed that the key elements were:

  1. Selling the Business: Acquiring new clients and growing our book.
  2. Renewing the Business: Retaining those clients and maintaining long-term revenue.
  3. Fulfilling the Business Agreements: Providing the promised service at a high level.

Then, I asked a tougher question: Which of these comes first?

Some argued that without selling new business, we wouldn’t survive. Others countered that retention was key because a one-time sale without renewal wasn’t sustainable.

Then, another group insisted that none of it mattered if we couldn’t deliver on our promises.

For two months, I kept asking the question. Finally, someone flipped it on me: “What do you think?”

“They all come first,” I said.

That’s what we needed to figure out. How could we ensure that all three areas operated at the highest level, simultaneously?

The Power of Specialization and Trust

The answer was specialization. We reorganized the team so that people focused on what they did best. Sellers focused on selling. Renewal specialists ensured clients stayed. Service experts delivered on the commitments we made.

The result? Our team of five operated with the same output as other teams of seventeen. Everyone knew their role, its importance, and how it impacted their teammates. More importantly, if someone was out for a day or a week, the rest of the team adapted seamlessly because they understood each other’s responsibilities and could step in without hesitation. They trusted one another, not by constantly checking each other’s work, but by playing their positions fully and communicating effectively.

The Secret to Moving Faster, Better, and Easier

When cooperation is at its peak, work doesn’t feel like constant friction. We don’t need to micromanage or question each other’s efforts. Instead, we operate with an understanding that every move we make has a ripple effect. It either accelerates progress or slows someone else down.

That’s the key: None of us is as smart as all of us. When we work together, trust each other, and stay focused on playing our own roles at the highest level, we don’t just get things done—we achieve things we never thought possible. That’s the power of cooperation.
