It’s Not Where You Work, It’s How You Work Together
At its core, every team is trying to answer one question: How do we work best—together? Not how do I work best, or how do you work best—but how do we work best as one team.
Because if one person wins and the other loses, the team doesn’t win.
That’s the mindset behind every discussion we have at ELEVATION180 about collaboration, productivity, and culture—and it’s especially true in the conversation that continues to dominate the modern workplace: in-office vs. remote vs. hybrid.
The Great Debate: Where Should Work Happen?
It’s a question we get asked constantly by leaders across industries: What’s your opinion on in-office, remote, or hybrid work?
Our answer? It depends—on the role, the person, and the purpose. There’s no blanket solution. Each format serves a unique need, and success comes from knowing which setting supports which outcome.
Let’s break that down.
When In-Person Work Matters Most
Some moments can’t be replicated through a screen.
When we’re defining direction, refining strategy, or aligning on vision—the kind of high-impact conversations that shape a company’s future—being in the same room is invaluable.
During our recent Weight of Effort sessions where we discuss the vision and plan for the following 6 months, for example, we were able to spark ideas, challenge perspectives, and connect in a way that only happens face-to-face. There’s an energy exchange that builds momentum and unity.
But that doesn’t mean everyone needs to be in the office all the time. The key is understanding what kind of work actually benefits from being together.
Open-concept offices, once considered the gold standard of collaboration, can actually kill productivity—especially for those who thrive in quiet focus. It’s not about one being better than the other; it’s about aligning environments with how people work best.
When Remote Work Makes Sense
Remote work opened up a whole new world of talent and flexibility.
Companies can now hire beyond their zip code, building teams that are diverse, specialized, and adaptable. For many roles—especially those that require independent, focused work or constant communication with external teams—remote is a clear win.
But again, context matters. If 24 out of 25 team members are in the same city and one is remote, that one person might struggle to stay connected and informed. Culture can easily become uneven if not intentionally managed.
That’s why the how of remote work is just as important as the where. You need systems that keep people included—whether that means regular video check-ins, quarterly in-person sessions, or structured communication habits that bridge the distance.
Hybrid: The Bridge Between Both Worlds
Hybrid work sits at the intersection of productivity and connection.
It allows teams to combine the best of both: the collaboration and energy of in-person time with the flexibility and focus of remote work.
But hybrid only works when it’s intentional—when you’re clear on why you’re meeting in person and when remote communication is sufficient.
For example, in our own rhythm:
- High-level strategy sessions happen in person.
- Project direction and decisions happen via Zoom, so we can read tone and ensure alignment.
- Quick check-ins or status updates live on Slack—because not everything needs to be a meeting.
This kind of clarity prevents wasted time, burnout, and communication fatigue.
The Real Question: What’s the Purpose of the Meeting?
The “where” of work often gets more attention than the “why.” But the real difference-maker is purpose.
Before defaulting to “this must be a Zoom” or “everyone back in the office,” ask:
- What’s the outcome we need?
- Is collaboration or focus more important here?
- Could this be solved faster with a message or document instead?
Awareness and Answers: The Future of Teamwork
The goal of this conversation isn’t to pick sides—it’s to increase awareness and offer new ways of thinking.
Every team operates differently, but one principle holds true across all of them: We’re on the same team, and we all need to win.
That means designing environments, expectations, and communication rhythms that honor both collaboration and individuality.
As work continues to evolve, the most successful organizations will be the ones that adapt with intention—building systems that serve both people and performance.
