From Amateur to Hall of Famer: What’s the Secret?
At ELEVATION180, we are obsessively dedicated to finding, creating, and sharing better ways to help people elevate their performance. Since I was young, I’ve been fascinated by those who can elevate their performance over long and sustainable periods—those we call “Hall of Famers.”
This fascination led me to study the characteristics of these exceptional individuals who consistently outperform the rest. While my analogy comes from sports, the principles I’ve discovered apply far beyond that, to areas like sales, leadership, and even parenting.
The Path from Amateur to Hall of Famer
Think of it this way: Everyone starts out as an Amateur, and there are many levels within this group—from those who are clueless but enthusiastic to those who are excellent at their craft.
Some Amateurs transition into becoming Pros. These individuals get paid for their performance, and within the ranks of professionals, there are many levels of success. Some Pros rise above for a short period and are celebrated as ‘All Stars’ or ‘All Pros.’
But then there are the select few—the Hall of Famers. These individuals don’t just succeed for a season or two; they perform at the highest level over time, becoming the best that ever lived in their respective fields.
The Real Difference
So what’s the difference between Amateurs, Pros, All Stars, and Hall of Famers? Many believe it’s raw, natural talent. While talent helps, it’s not the secret ingredient. In fact, many people with God-given talent never become Pros, much less Hall of Famers.
The good news is that we all have access to the real secret: Deliberate Preparation and Practice.
Hall of Famers do daily what most people do occasionally. They believe in mastering the fundamentals—every single day. That’s what stands the test of time. They don’t just practice until they get it right; they practice until they can’t get it wrong. That’s a different mindset.
Simple, Not Easy
While this formula is simple, it’s far from easy. That’s why most people don’t do it. If you’re looking for an easy button, you’re not going to find it—not for results that last. But for those still reading, here’s what I’ve found works best to get started:
1. Schedule Time for Daily Preparation and Practice
Commit to a timeframe that’s manageable at first. Start with 15 minutes a day for the first week or month. Once you get into the rhythm, you can gradually increase your practice time. But overcommitting early can lead to burnout, making consistency difficult. If you miss a day, don’t beat yourself up—just get back to it the next day. Eventually, it’ll become a habit.
2. Shift Your Mindset Around Preparation and Practice
Track your results, and ask yourself each day: Were your results better or worse because of your preparation and practice?
Treat prep time as the most important part of your day. Think about it this way: If you had a meeting scheduled with your best client or biggest prospect, would you ever skip it or show up unprepared? Of course not. But many people do that every day when it comes to their prep and practice time.
The secret ingredient—deliberate preparation and practice—is available to all of us, and it’s free! Hall of Famers understand this better than anyone. Their purposeful approach to preparation and practice is their biggest priority.
