Don't Just Think It. Say It.

Every November, gratitude gets its annual moment in the spotlight. But this year, we asked ourselves a slightly deeper question: What did this year teach us to truly appreciate?

For our team, the answer came down to health, community, and the relationships that hold us steady when life gets tough. Nothing deepens appreciation quite like recognizing the foundations that hold you up.

The Lost Art of the Handwritten Note

We tell our clients all the time: send handwritten thank-you notes. In a digital-first world, they stand out precisely because almost no one takes the time to write them anymore.

Think about your mailbox today. It’s usually a pile of bills, ads or junk mail. But when you spot an envelope with your name written in actual ink, you reach to open that one first. And after reading it, you don't toss it in the recycling. You keep it on your desk, tuck it in a drawer, or pin it to the fridge.

A quick text or email is thoughtful, but a physical card shows that someone intentionally paused, sat down, and carved out time for you. Most of us can still vividly remember the last card we received—and who sent it.

A handwritten note communicates something profound: You were worth my time, and you still are. In a world of automated email blasts and generic holiday templates, it’s a powerful differentiator—and simply a meaningful way to honor people.

Pick Up the Phone

Even better than a card? A phone call.

There’s a commercial running that captures this perfectly: an Uber driver watches a passenger reach for their phone and offers a simple reminder—If you have time to scroll, you have time to call someone you love. He couldn't be more right.

Every Thanksgiving, Jerry calls about ten people who shaped his life. One is his former college baseball coach, who hasn't coached him in nearly 50 years. Jerry still calls him "Coach." Visiting him in North Carolina this past January was a grounding reminder: no one ever looks back on life and wishes they had reached out less.

Don't Wait for "Next Time"

Over the past year, we’ve lost people including mentors who meant the world to us. It was a sobering reminder that "next time" isn't guaranteed.

If someone has been on your mind recently—a client, a colleague, a friend, or someone you shared just one meaningful conversation with—don't write it off as a coincidence. Reach out and tell them.
